The demands on government CIOs are many, ranging from digital transformation that supports the delivery of fully accessible citizen services to technology modernization that enables secure and advanced network architectures.
The trust and partnership between government and industry underpin these efforts, and, in recognition of exemplary actions to move forward IT modernization in our digital age, this year’s 2019 Wash100 awardees have been announced.
While I graciously accept being selected as a 2019 Wash100 awardee, I do so as a representative of the CenturyLink employees who are achieving great things across the entire federal marketplace, as well as my fellow awardees who represent the best of the best in government technology leadership. Will Hurd, U.S. House of Representatives (R-Texas), holds a firm commitment to emerging technology and increased coordination between government and industry to explore and expand investments in AI technologies. His work on the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on IT, promises — and delivers — innovation in government.
Suzette Kent, U.S. CIO, Office of Management and Budget, joined the Administration a year ago, and her tenure has been one marked by vision and accomplishment. She is a driving force behind government’s modernization and cyber efforts.
Chris Krebs, Director, Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, has stepped up to head CISA where he is focused on improving government’s cybersecurity posture by engaging with the private sector as well as all levels of government to defend America’s power grids, banks, telecommunications, and other critical parts of our economy.
Emily Murphy, Administrator, U.S. General Services Administration, creates value for the American people by strategically providing efficient and effective acquisition solutions across government, and her four priorities — ethical leadership, reducing duplication, increasing competition, and improving transparency – have supported the agency’s unique position as a mission-enabler across government.
Army General Paul Nakasone, Commander, U.S. Cyber Command and Director, National Security Agency as well as Chief, Central Security Service, has brought talent and direction to the building of the new USCYBERCOM in 2018. Operating daily in cyberspace against capable adversaries, many of whom are near-peer competitors in this domain, more than 130 Cyber Mission Force teams achieved full operational capability early to tackle the country’s growing cyber threats.
Mark Warner, U.S. Senator (D-Va.), represents the largest cybersecurity workforce in the country, and Virginia is home to many of the most sophisticated cybersecurity missions in the federal government. He has advocated for resources within the federal government that will put our federal, state and local governments on a more secure cyber footing.
As Senior Vice President of Strategic Government for CenturyLink, I have been privileged to support the government’s mission of serving and protecting American citizens and our way of life. However, the barriers to digital transformation for public sector organizations can be overwhelming. CenturyLink works with customers to modernize their IT infrastructure and technology, thus improving lives with every connection.
Federal CIO Suzette Kent dubbed 2018 as a year-long policy sprint, saying that modern technology needs modern policy, and this past year had it all. From far-reaching initiatives like FITARA and risk management initiatives to excitement over the centers of excellence and technology modernization funds and the consolidation of IT contracts, 2018 has laid a strong foundation for the 2019 sprint ahead.
I stand ready to help support government’s mission and drive through partnerships, this year and beyond. I am proud to serve with visionaries like these and help craft a more modern, agile, cost-effective and secure government today.
